Abstrakt (ENG):

René Wellek is well known as a literary historian, theoretician and comparatist, and also as an author of many highly influenced works (e.g. Theory of Literature, 1949 /with a. Warren/; A History of Modern Criticism: 1750‑1950, 1955-1992; Essays on Czech Literature, 1963; Concepts of Criticism, 1963; etc.). He became one of the most prominent promoters and interpreters of Russian Formalism and Czech Structuralism. Although he was not an indiscriminate supporter of these approaches to literary studies, he made a significant contribution to their evaluation and, to a degree, their popularization. The widest frame of this excursus to rené Wellek’s connection with the Prague School is set by two fundamental questions: (1) What was René Wellek’s relationship with the Prague Linguistic Circle, and (2) What was his understanding and interpretation of Jan Mukařovský’s literary theory and aesthetics? The author of the study claims that René Wellek was always proud of his membership in the Prague Linguistic Circle and he defended and promoted the practical and theoretical achievements of its members. However, in his interpretations he mainly dealt with concepts from the era he himself experienced in the Circle.
