Abstrakt (ENG):

The article is thematically anchored in the field of Slovak realistic literature at the
end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. It deals with the analysis of the depiction of such types of characters in the works of writers M. Kukučín, Ľ. Podjavorinská, J. Gregor Tajovský, and playwright J. Hollý, who, through their social, physical or mental handicap, set up a mirror for the realistic problems of Slovak village society. The article pays special attention to the character of Maťo Kytas, who is the protagonist in Hviezdoslavʼs epic poem Na obnôcke. By analysing him, the author of the article came to the conclusion that Hviezdoslavʼs character is typologically close to the Kukučín character of Ondráš Machula from the short story Neprebudený. In their respective naive views of the world, they both are unable to cross the boundaries of adult life. Thanks to prejudices, cultural traditionalism and unwritten laws of life in the rural milieu, the villagers cannot find their way to them, they underestimate them, they ridicule their otherness, while they themselves suffer from moral, intellectual and civilizational ills.
