Abstrakt (ENG):

The paper focuses on the post-war poetic activity and theoretical works of Pavol Gašparovič Hlbina and attempts to identify the turning points that led him, as the only representative of Slovak Catholic modernism, to turn to collaboration with the communist regime established in 1948. The analysis of contemporary documents stored in the Literary Archive of the Slovak National Library in Martin shows that the author was well versed in Catholic social doctrine and Marxist philosophy. From this it can be concluded that Hlbina’s decision to become a so-called peace priest was a conscious one. However, his blind faith in a possible compromise between Christianity and Marxism that could guarantee freedom of religion can be considered naive.
