Abstrakt (ENG):

This paper examines the relationship between politics and art over a period of more than forty years in Czechoslovakia. It traces the system’s power pressure on writers from the mid-1940s onwards, the active participation of politicians in writers’ congresses, the form of setting standards and criteria for literature, and names its bearers among the Marxist ideologues of literature and the top Communist authorities (presidents, prime ministers, members of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia). It also mentions the artistic argument against this system, using the example of Milan Kundera’s novel The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, including the thematization of memory and oblivion, or the elimination of man from existence by the authorities.
