Abstrakt (ENG):

The rise of new technological discoveries and scientific knowledge of various kinds in the 19th century inspired literary creators in an unusually powerful way to depict these issues in their artistic representations. Hviezdoslav was no exception; in his 1886 poetry collection Sonnets, he tackled not just this topic, but also the mysteries of God’s existence in man and the universe. The author of this study first analyses the genesis of this collection, specifically recalling its thematic and poetic links with the poetic collection Písně Kosmické (1982), the author of which is the Czech poet Jan Neruda. The second part of the study interprets in detail the thematic, semantic, poetic, and versological contexts of the collection. The author concludes that the Sonnets mark the end of a period of early “cosmic” lyricism in Hviezdoslav’s poetry, in which the author directed his poetic imagination to the essential issues of his spiritual orientation and creative work.
