Abstrakt (ENG):

This work will serve as a basis for examining the extent to which Slovak ESL (English as a Second Language) learners are able to identify pragmatic markers and determine their function in English texts. Although linguists disagree on the definition of PMs, we will base our approach on previous research of experts such as Fraser, Neary-Sundquist, Schiffrin, Carter and McCarthy, who have focused on the study of PMs in English. We will move along the lines of reading literacy and interpretative/pragmatic competence, which we extend into the aspect of functional literacy as the ability to process pragmatic information in text. The aim of our study is to introduce a set of Slovak pragmatic markers and their English counterparts functioning as conversation turns. In this
approach, counterparts (or analogs) are understood as mirror alternatives of content in the language means. An analogy means that the lexical correspondence between the terms in the mother language and second language can be assessed as adequate, even if it doesn’t correspond to word-for-word translation. In terms of the participation concept, we distinguish between non-participatory and participatory discursive-illocutionary types of turns. We will also point out the link between the formal and semantic aspects of turn-constructional components and the formal-semantic aspects of pragmatic markers. It is our belief that our analysis will help to provide a framework for acquisition of PMs by Slovak ESL (English as a second language) learners. This is very important, since understanding PMs within the target language is one of the steps toward functional literacy as the ability to extract pragmatic information from text or conversation.
