Abstrakt (ENG):
The basis of this short study is that the main theme and motive of the poetry of the Portuguese poet Florbela Espanca (1894-1930), one of the most significant Portuguese poetry authors of the first half of the XX. century is pain and death. The objective is to clarify the meaning of these two categories in her work and explain that it is not a romantic attachment to pain and death, but rather existential pain, from which death is the only escape. Through analyzing the themes in Florbela Espanca’s work we find that the motive of death appears in all themes, it is included in amatory poetry, introspective poetry, even natural lyric poetry. In Florbela Espanca poetry it is pain from anxiety, the
incognoscibility of oneself and the world.
