Abstrakt (ENG):

The name of St. Svorad derives from Proto-Slavic *Svojeradъ. It is a compound name, suggesting the noble origins of its bearer. This is also confirmed by the Bratislava manuscript of the legend. Given the nature of Svorad’s asceticism, the origin “de terra Poloniensi/Poliensi” is best interpreted as referring to the land of the Polians, meaning Kievan Rus’. During the 10th and 11th centuries, many Eastern monks and nuns came to Hungary. Moreover, after the death of Svorad’s contemporary saints in Kievan Rus’, antivampire practices and exorcisms were performed. Since on Chochel, just a few hundred meters from the Cave of St. Svorad at Skalka, a socially prominent individual is buried in the church as a vampire, this seems to be further evidence of cultural contacts between the Zobor Monastery and Old Church Slavic or Old Russian Church Slavic culture.
