Abstrakt (ENG):
The principle of contrast is considered to be a significant part of the structure of Dominik Tatarka‘s early proses (short stories and novellas written between 1933 and 1948). In the text itself, this is often manifested through the use of binary opositions, implemented in the categories of motives, characters and setting. In our study, we aim to show the way how Tatarka uses the binary opositions and how he combines them into a compact system. In order to achieve this goal, we decided to interpret a novella called Pred zrkadlom [In Front of a Mirror] from Tatarka‘s debut short stories collection V úzkosti hľadania [In the Anxiety of Searching], in which the use of binary opositions is widespread and crucial to the overal structure of the novella.
