Abstrakt (ENG):

This article examines Jiří Kolář’s approach to foreign texts in his poetry collection Prometheus‘s liver (1950). By extensively quoting and adapting external sources, Kolář challenges traditional notions of authorship and blurs the lines between original writing and borrowed material. Special attention is given to his transformation of Zofia Nałkowska’s short story and an excerpt from Josef Škvorecký’s early prose. Drawing on archival research, the article also discusses Kolář’s collaboration with Jiří Kotalík in translating T. S. Eliot’s The Hollow Men. Taken together, these examples demonstrate how Prometheus‘s liver marks a pivotal shift in Kolář’s development and contributes to the evolving cultural and literary landscape of early communist Czechoslovakia.
