Abstrakt (ENG):

The paper is focused on an impact of a poet, teacher and a translator James Sutherland‑Smith who, being of Scottish origin, has lived and worked in Slovakia since 1989. Though Sutherland‑Smith is a part of the British cultural scene, he is also affecting the Slovak culture by choosing Slovak reality as his frequent subject. The poetics of Sutherland‑Smith’s poetry that is based on including historical and current affairs alongside his analytical approach make his poems valuable source of Slovak cultural awareness. However, this circumstance is not to diminish other aesthetic values of Sutherland‑Smith’s poetry even when they are sometimes overlooked by critics.
